I Heart Headphones

  1. So, there’s this thing.  And it’s really hard to explain because it seems like this miniscule detail that you really can’t put your finger on.  It stays in the back of your mind and festers there because all you know is that this miniscule detail is just a thing.  I’m guessing in my case, this thing happens to be two proverbial question: what’s the big deal?  Is there really a big difference?

These questions aren’t just geared toward computer preferences or music headphones.  I can’t help that I’m a PC who happens to use a Mac or I prefer Sony headphones compared to Altec.  That’s why this thing; those questions are still jammed in my head.  That’s why I’m wondering why I have to buy a licensed version of Microsoft Office.  That’s why I’m wondering why I have to use iTunes.  Why can’t I rip my Robotech collection for personal use without having the feeling that I’m breaking the law?

FU DRM!  Here’s to you Free Culture…

Digital rights management pretty much dictates the state of social culture.  The music in my iTunes library are coded with DRM licenses and the DVDs I buy are copy-protected, so I can’t rip them to my hard-drive without doing it by questionable means.  To say digital rights management sucks and is unfair would be a juvenile statement.  In turn, I have decided to be juvenile.  This concept does suck.  I know; there’s a more articulate way to express my discontent.  But who cares!  Why can’t I live in a culture like this?

This would be an example of the free culture movement.  I have the choice to buy a CD or get the same material through a digital means.  Shouldn’t people have the right to choose?

In that respect, it’s time to choose between a pair of headphones that look so similar that the features aren’t even that different either.  Altec or Sony?  Sony or Altec?  It’s really a brand preference.  The prices of the headphones aren’t too far off of each other to really make a difference.  The only thing that should be taken into consideration is whether a behind the neck style of headphones would be comfortable enough for you.
